What Is Steampunk

What is Steampunk?

Steampunk is often referred to as the “greatest era that never was.” Set in the late 19th century, it encompasses all of the romanticism of the Victorian Era. Steampunk Clothing is becoming increasingly popular worldwide and The Burlesque Boutique stocks both men and womens Steampunk Clothing and Outfits. Steampunk has elements of Burlesque and Gothic with the corset being one of the main parts of your costume.
Coluors are commonly neutral, browns, blacks, creams and gold/bronze. Outfits are often put together by at least one prominent accessory, such as goggles, parasols, top hats.

A typical Steampunk costume is usually a dress or skirt again earthy neutral colours complete with a lacy petticoat or bloomers/pantaloons teamed with a Steampunk style corset either overbust or under-bust, and some sort of Steampunk headwear, often a small, feminine top hat or a floral pin.

Outerwear often includes riding jackets, flight jackets, and carriage coats. Elegant gloves are a also common sight for any Steampunk Lady!
We really hope this little blog will help you choose your Steampunk Outfit and gives you a bit of a heads up on the awesome Steampunk Look!

Moulin Rouge Hen Night Costumes

It's officially the start of the 'Wedding' season and we are busy working on lots of dresses to make the lovely hens and her friends look totally gorgeous ;) Burlesque theme hen nights are getting more and more popular. The Burlesque bride look normally consists of a white feather or net costume with white accessories such as gloves, stockings and fascinator or cute little mini top hat. This look is totally sexy but also very classy!

Moulin rouge themed hen nights are equally as popular and has pretty much the same look as burlesque but maybe a little more 'showgirly'!! maybe an ostrich feather in the hair instead of the mini top hat.

The next theme which is always a winner and an excuse for being totally over the top is 'Big fat gypsy wedding' for a big fat gypsy wedding costume it has to be a vibrant coloured costume normally hot pinks and turquoise our Petunia feather dress is perfect for this theme finished with some 'BIG' jewellery.

Enjoy organising and planning your hen night after all it is an extremely exciting time ;)

Burlesque Corset

The Corset!

The Corset?  Well so much to say about this beautiful garment. Corsets date back since the 16th century and were made by a 'corset maker' or 'corsetier' to fit the 'individuals' body to hold and shape the torso for medical purposes. In the modern world now they are classed as a beautiful fashion garment whether it will be worn as burlesque clothing or very popular currently as part of a Moulin Rouge costume inspired by Christina Aguilera costume in the film Moulin Rouge and Burlesque! Burlesque corsets are made to emphasize a curvy figure and at the same time reduce the waist.

All our Steel Boned Burlesque Corsets have suspender loops and a modesty panel and we use silk cording to lace rather than ribbon so this makes the lacing easier to pull in for a nice tight fit to give you that hour glass figure we all crave!

Steel boned corsets should not be confused with 'vinyl boning' as these are hard plastic bones and are generally classed as fashion corsets perfect for burlesque fancy dress but do also still look fab for their price!

PUTTING A CORSET ON!

There is a slight art to how to put a corset on!

* Make sure your corset is the right way up!! normally the suspender loops will give an indication of this.
* Undo lacing at the back enough to get the corset around you and make sure the modesty panel is flat.
* Start to fasten the clips at the front starting from the middle, the top and bottom clips should then clip easily into place!
* Start pulling in the lacing at the back away from your body until you reach your desired tightness around your waist and bust. Do not pull too tight if this is the first time you have worn a corset! You can tighten as you get more used to wearing it.
